Blended Families

Blending a family with children from previous relationships can take all the fun out of marriage. Blended families function differently than nuclear families. It is important to understand the dynamics, set realistic expectations and have a deliberate plan to grow the Christian stepfamily.

We have experienced the ups and downs of blended family life raising six children for the past 12 years. Along the way, we have encouraged many couples by directing them The Smart Stepfamily by Ron L. Deal. We highly recommend this book for anyone in the tangles of a blended family, as well as those contemplating a marriage with children. Ron also has an excellent web site at www.successfulstepfamilies.com, which offers articles and information on upcoming seminars.

If you are living in a blended family, what are some of the issues you have encountered? What have you done to build strength and harmony in your blended family?

Parenting with Love and Logic

Five years ago, I was a mom who yelled at my kids. I was home with them each day, and I counted the hours until my husband would return from work so that I could have a break from the small monsters who had invaded my home. I was at my wit’s end, and was taking advice from anyone who would give it.

When one of my friends suggested Love and Logic, I picked up one of their books, read it cover to cover and was hooked. The parenting style recommended in the book was unlike anything I’d come across before. It actually recognized that kids could be responsible for many of their own actions, and that, as a loving parent, it only made sense that I would hold them accountable for those actions. It encouraged me to have fun as a parent, and to actually enjoy my kids rather than argue with them constantly while trying to administer control over them. It changed my life and my family.

Today, it is my goal to help other parents find the same family harmony that I did by helping them discover how Love and Logic can also change their lives.
